Thank you GOD for the world so sweet.
Thank you GOD for the food we eat.
Thank you GOD for the birds that sing.
Thank you GOD for Everything.
These were my four lines of prayer everyday before going to bed as a little girl. I’ve probably said these lines so many times that the memory of these lines are etched in my mind.
It’s M’s term time holidays from the 12th to the 20th of October. M and I roamed the Edinburgh Royal mile and went to the Children’s library, yesterday . On our way we stumbled upon the Museum of Childhood. We walked in and got to see the toys of yesteryears. The little boys and girls who worked long hours and the pictures of little boys used as Chimney soot cleaners until the 1950’s. They had a good collection of toy trains and cars and the wooden toys that would remind grandparents of their childhood. The early prams and tricycles, there were a lot of stuff to see..
Guess what I saw there :
A poster of a Happy Family with the little one fast asleep, food on the table and a prayer before dinner. Fresh fruits in abundance. If you actually look closer – just next to the little girls chair is a black cat drinking milk from a saucer. The words that invoked my memory were on the blue frame surrounding this happy set up….Truly made me smile. The words of my childhood prayer.
I was a bit curious , about the origin of these lines. I’m sure all our nursery rhymes came from the British. How exactly did my lines of prayer reach me ? took a closer look at the poster to find this.
“CHILD EDUCATION” WALL PICTURES Autumn extra number, 1931 ” A CHILD’s GRACE”
A poster from 1931 – I wonder how long the four line prayer has been coined since ?
Well, for a bit of fun with M :
WELL BEHAVED CHILDREN ARE WELCOME, THE REST WILL BE MADE INTO BURGERS !
M and I did have a good laugh !
